I’ve been thinking and wanting to write a new article since, who knows…Trying hard not to procrastinate further, and here goes. It’s already been sometime that I’ve seen, heard, and read about how our human communication are slacking or getting from bad to worst. As a human, we are creatures of emotions, no? We communicate with our spouses, friends or business acquaintances via body language, emotions, and of course, we speak.
However, many people are lacking the ‘skills’ of communication or human management. These days, most of us would prefer to stick our nose onto a digital device, rather than spending time with friends and family. Is it one of the main reason? I’m not so sure. As a PR Advisor, I do come across friends from the media side mentioning how younger PR personnel are driving them mad at times. From the what I’ve heard, maybe I should write a book called ‘How to lose the media in minutesseconds‘.
Being in the PR industry, one must understand what their role(s) and requirements are. It sounds easy and some would think being PR is all about the glamour, status, the perks. But a person must take the initiative to dig deeper on the job, best to be, actively hands on! I believed so, that’s how we’ve learnt traditionally, and back in the late 90’s, we rarely heard about jobs or position as communication specialist or PR specialist. There are, but hardly.
Is it really that hard to understand one’s job in this current era? With courses that provide communication, PR, human management training, it should be easier for a person to pick up the basics. I’m wondering too (not blaming) if one gets enough of practical training during these courses? Simple courtesy on the phone seems like a luxury, these days.
Or it could be that we are talking too much, or drowning in our own thoughts that we totally forget to do the most important and simplest thing…listen?
